< Example of a deity representation in Korean shamanism

In Gut 굿 (Korean shaman rituals), deity images and objects are used as ritual props. Artistically inspired by this, I created this series for the music theater ritual „Gib uns Antwort (Give us an answer)“, in collaboration with Sol-i So (premiere on June 25, 2021).

Korean shamanism is the ethnic religion of Korea, and Gut 굿 is a ritual in which shamans offer sacrifices to gods, spirits, and ancestors. Gut 굿 encompasses dance, singing, musical instruments, as well as deity images and various ritual objects. The purposes of a Gut are diverse: they promote peace and prosperity for the state, family, or community, heal illnesses, and guide the souls of the deceased to the afterlife.

In a Gut 굿, the deity images that the shamans believe in are always placed on the altar. The depiction of gods as ordinary people is based on the shamanistic belief that humans are gods. More precisely, the spirits of the deceased are revered as gods. These ancestral spirits are our forebears and thus the foundation and roots of our generation. Even if we do not know what our ancestors looked like, we can easily imagine their appearance because we know what we ourselves look like. This representation reflects the human-centered worldview of shamanism and emphasizes the human perspective on the world.

In Gut 굿 (koreanischen Schamanenritualen) werden Götterbilder und Objekte als rituelle Requisiten verwendet. In künstlerischer Anlehnung daran habe ich diese Serie für ein Musiktheater-Ritual „Gib uns Antwort“ entworfen, an dem ich mit Sol-i So zusammengearbeitet habe (Premiere 25.06.2021).

Der koreanische Schamanismus ist die ethnische Religion Koreas, und Gut 굿 ist ein Ritual, bei dem Schamanen Opfergaben an Götter, Geister und Ahnen darbringen. Gut 굿 umfasst Tanz, Gesang, Instrumente sowie Götterbilder und verschiedene rituelle Requisiten. Die Zwecke eines Gut sind vielfältig: Sie fördern Frieden und Wohlstand für Staat, Familie oder Gemeinschaft, heilen Krankheiten und führen die Seelen der Verstorbenen ins Jenseits.

In einem Gut 굿 sind immer die Götterbilder, an die die Schamanen glauben, auf dem Altar aufgestellt. Die Darstellung von Göttern als gewöhnliche Menschen basiert auf der schamanistischen Idee, dass Menschen Götter sind. Genauer gesagt, die Geister von Verstorbenen werden als Götter verehrt. Diese Ahnengeister sind unsere Vorfahren und somit die Grundlage und Wurzeln unserer Generation. Auch wenn wir nicht wissen, wie unsere Vorfahren aussahen, können wir uns ihr Aussehen leicht vorstellen, da wir wissen, wie wir selbst aussehen. Diese Darstellung spiegelt die menschenzentrierte schamanistische Weltanschauung wider und betont die menschliche Perspektive auf die Welt.
